1 Billion USD on Facial Recognition: Did Like.com Pivot Too Soon?

We spotted this stat on FBI spending more than a billion dollars on face recognition:

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has a $1 billion budget for its latest venture: using facial recognition technology to fight crime. Dubbed the Next Generation Identification (NGI) project, it has already been approved in some states (the pilot programme started in February), and is expected to go nationwide by 2014, according to NewScientist.”

And this is the first thing that came to our mind: Did Munjal Shah sell out too soon? Google bought Like.com for about 100 Million dollars. Or in fact, did they pivot too soon, from face recognition to products matching?
