Album Sales: Digital Stores Outpace Physical Ones For The First Time

We have spotted quite a few defining moments – for instance, when Amazon sold more kindle books than physical books. We spotted one such defining moment today – for the first time, digital music stores outpaced physical stores in overall album sales. (Source). While it might be obvious that Walmart and Target type stores were bound to lose out, the fact that it happened this year is remarkable.

The other notable stat is that digital music now accounts for 55.9% of all music sales in the U.S. — including both full albums as well as track-equivalent albums.
