The Magic Number 41

We had written recently about how 20k downloads a day is fast becoming the new benchmark for how well an app is doing in the consumer marketplace. We spotte this today:

“With one in two in the United States now owning a smartphone (was 40 percent of mobile subscribers in 2011), app downloads are on the rise, too.

Compared to last year, the average smartphone consumer in the U.S. now has 41 apps on their home screen, a 28 percent increase from 32 apps in last year, according to a Nielsen study released this morning.”

10% Of All Web Traffic Comes From Mobile Devices

We had spotted mobile internet stats and mcommerce stats before. We spotted this today:

“In the U.S., 7.96% of all Web traffic comes from mobile devices, according to data from StatCounter. That includes smartphones, tablets, and other connected hardware, such as laptops with mobile broadband access. StatCounter’s data shows that mobile Web use is increasing quickly, especially in developing regions where mobile phones vastly outnumber desktop computers.
For example, the percentage of mobile Web traffic in Asia climbed from 6.1% to 17.84% between 2010 and 2012, an increase of 192%. The percentage of mobile Web traffic in Africa climbed from 5.81% to 14.85% between 2010 and 2012, an increase of 156%. Every region saw increased mobile traffic, with South America falling in last place with 2.86%.”

Mobile Contract Cutting – The Latest Emerging Trend?

We had spotted multiple facts on cord cutters in general and cord cutting stats. Numbers, obviously, point to trends – we spotted this today:

“The seven largest U.S. phone companies, representing more than 95 percent of the market, lost a combined 52,000 subscribers from contract-based plans in the January to March period, according to a tally by the Associated Press. The companies have a combined 220 million devices on such plans, accounting for about two-thirds of the total number of devices.

Is this a trend? We do not know yet. These numbers, while high, do not indicate a trend yet. But it is a worrying fact for carriers.

App Download Statistics: Is 20K Installs Per Day The New Norm?

There are benchmarks all over the place. Million uniques per month. Billions of dollars in bailouts. Millions in VC Investment. So when a new norm is discussed, we find it very interesting. We spotted this today:

“FB Open Graph integration is clearly paying off for developers. My worry is how long it lasts, namely, Facebook can change the rules of the road anytime they want. When I was on the board at OMGPOP, I saw how impactful (positive & negative), Facebook’s changes could be with things like notifications and invites. Is Facebook traffic a game to be played or something else? I wrestle with this question everytime I see that hockey stick chart coming from FB traffic.

I’ve been meeting a string of startups getting 20k installs per day (or more) very quickly. Is this the new norm? I know how long it took Twitter, Tumblr and Foursquare to reach that level of daily sign ups. It took a lot longer than a few months. ”

How do we digest this number? We can definitely try. How about starting with the number of devices and working backwards (1 in 100 users hear about it, 1 in 10 of those who heard install etc) – no that wouldn’t work. Let us try this: There are, say, 15-20 employees. Each has a network reach of a 1000 on average to start with – thats the right direction to digest this stat we think. It would be a graph that has to have a virality quotient etc.

‘We Invested In Steve Jobs’ : AT&T CEO

We always have a great time spotting Apple stats – we had spotted iphone statistics and ipad statistics – we spotted this today:

“But despite his disdain for iMessage and costly data plans, Stephenson said that he doesn’t regret AT&T’s decision to support the iPhone back in 2007. He recalls a conversation he had with Cingular’s then-CEO Stan Sigman right after a meeting with Steve Jobs:

“I remember asking the question: Are we investing in a business model, are we investing in a product or are reinvesting in Steve Jobs? The answer to the question was, you’re investing in Steve Jobs. Let’s go after this thing. And we went after it, and the rest is history.””

Kindle Fire Statistics: Only 700,000 Fires Shipped In Q1 2012

Well this has to be bad news for Amazon – which still calls the Kindle “World’s Bestselling E-Reader” – we spotted this today:

“According to data from IDC, Amazon only shipped — that’s shipped, not sold — 696,000 Kindle Fires last quarter. That’s a paltry 4% of the market, and it’s a big drop from the quarter before when Amazon had 16.8% of the market, shipping 4.7 million Kindle Fires.

Well, there are multiple ways to digest this fact – people might be waiting for a better, second version. Reported issues on the device. Lack of a huge ecosystem etc. But facts are facts, and Amazon has work to do.

Mobile Phone Statistics: Apple Has 8.8 Percent Marketshare And 73 Percent of Profits

We have been tracking this trend for some time now – how Apple has actually reinvented the phone industry – the stats are in a way surprising – if you consider the overall cellphone market (not just smartphones) Apple has a solid proportion of the profits (roughly three fourths of ALL mobile phone profits) but less than 10 percent marketshare. We had spotted similar cellphone industry stats before as well. We spotted this today:

” Asymco’s Horace Dediu on Thursday updated his quarterly review of mobile phone profits, and the news for everyone but Apple (AAPL) and Samsung is not good.
Apple is in roughly the same position it was last quarter, with an 8.8% share of the market in terms of units shipped (according to IDC) and a share of profits (according to Dediu) down two percentage points to 73%.
Samsung, riding the Google (GOOG) Android juggernaut, grew its market share (by units shipped) to 23.5%, up 35.4% year over year, and its share of the profits to 26%.”

When you try to digest this stat, do remember that the marketshare is based on number of units shipped and not dollar revenue.

Tablet Statistics: 10? Tablets Have a 39-Percent Higher Consumption Rate Than 7? Tablets

We had spotted multiple tablet statistics in the past. We spotted this today:

“Tablet adoption among U.S. consumers continues to climb as more devices appealing to various price and feature preferences are introduced to the market. Screen size is perhaps the most outwardly apparent differentiator between devices, with the market offering consumers a wide variety of options such as the 10? Apple iPad, 9? Sony S1, 7? Amazon Kindle Fire and 5? Dell Streak. Analysis of page view consumption by screen size found a strong positive association between screen size and content consumption. Specifically, 10? tablets have a 39-percent higher consumption rate than 7? tablets and a 58-percent higher rate than 5? tablets.”
