Its not the cell phone. Not the digital camera. None of the iDevices. So what is it?
We spotted this today:
“When we think about the great consumer electronics technologies of our time, the cellular phone probably springs to mind. If we go farther back, perhaps we’d pick the color television or the digital camera. But none of those products were adopted as fast by the American people as the boom box.
That factoid is a sidenote in a 2011 paper that I stumbled on from the Journal of Management and Marketing Research. Author Tarique Hossain included data from the Consumer Electronics Manufacturing Association on the “observed penetration rate at the end of the 7th year” for all the technologies listed above. Hossain’s data didn’t include the starting years for these seven-year periods, but I’m assuming they mark the introduction of the boom box in the mid-1970s. That would mean that by the early 1980s, more than 60 percent of American households owned some kind of portable cassette player with speakers attached to it. ”

Spotify’s recent launch in the U.S. is seen as having been a big boost for the company, and its Facebook integration is said to have bolstered new subscriptions as well. ”

We have spotted some interesting Ringtone statistics before. We had digested that particular stat as a “less than a billion USD” business – we spotted this today:
“More than 10 years after Napster, one of the key pillars of the music business is ringtones, a business that peaked around 2005, when some of you would have recognized the image at the top right of this post.
If you’re reading this, you probably haven’t paid for a ringtone since 2007, and you probably don’t know anyone who does. But there it is, generating two-point-one-billion dollars.”

We had spotted some stats on online music and cd sales – we spotted this today:
“A report from Side-Line cites a number of anonymous music industry insiders who confirmed to the music magazine that the major labels are planning to stop pressing new CDs by the end of next year, if not sooner.
The issue, the argument goes, is that CDs cost money to create, store, and distribute and shifting to all-digital distribution will free up more resources for marketing and other parts of the business.”

[Updated] Spotify statistics
We spotted this today:
“The streaming music service has already signed up 1.4 million U.S. users for its free trial, according to a source familiar with the company’s operations.
At least as important: Spotify now has 175,000 paying U.S. subscribers, less than a month after it finally opened its doors in America, says the same source. ”

We spotted this today:
“Last Wednesday, research firm Nielsen SoundScan announced that the industry recorded a 1 percent increase in overall U.S. album sales for the first six months of the year, snapping a dismal seven-year run of sales declines. Digital music helped power the gains as sales of digital tracks rose 11 percent, a rebound from the 1 percent growth for all of 2010. Digital albums grew at a healthy 19 percent.
Nobody is dancing in the streets, but the numbers have stirred hope among some connected to the business that a decade-long revenue slide–which they trace to Napster and the onset of illegal file sharing–may be over. “I think the rise in album sales certainly gives one cause for cautious optimism,” said John Marmaduke, CEO of Hastings Entertainment, a chain store that sells books, DVDs, and CDs.”

After LinkedIn and Groupon, it is Pandora’s turn now. We spotted this today:
“Pandora initially filed its S-1 in February and now has 94 million registered users. A few weeks ago, the company released its most recent revenue numbers, which reflected an increase in both sales and usage for the internet radio service.
For example, Pandora is adding a new registered user every second. In Pandora’s fiscal year ended January 31, 2011, Pandora streamed 3.8 billion hours of radio listening. In the three months ending April 30, 2011 Pandora posted revenues of $51 million, up from $29.6 million during the same period in 2010.”
