We had spotted the most tweeted event in the world – one question that we always wanted to find out the answer for, was this – which is the most watched TV event, ever? must be some sports event – how about a superbowl – or, going by the popularity of cricket in the world’s second most populous country, India, could it be a cricket match? We spotted this today:
“Estimates for the 2008 Summer Olympics opening ceremony global TV viewership varied between one and four billion, including an estimated 842 million viewers watching on host Chinese broadcaster China Central Television.A verifiable audience of 984 million tuned in to the opening ceremony at some stage, averaging at 593 million, while 778 million watched the closing ceremony. The 2008 Summer Olympics is the current record holder for a multi-day broadcast. It is estimated by Nielsen Media Research that up to 4.7 billion individual viewers (70% of the world’s population) watched some part of the coverage.”

We had spotted some interesting IPL Stats in the past and some real crazy cricket stats – maybe this is an industry thats nearing maturity now – we spotted this today:
“The first matches of the season had recorded an average Television Viewership Rating (TVR) of 3.76, 18.7% less than the previous season.[19] The viewership was also reportedly low for the opening ceremony with a rating of 1.3 TVR.[20] The downfall was attributed to the number of matches being played, as the count stands at 76 among 9 teams.[21] The rating continued to fall as the cumulative number of people who tuned in to watch those[which?] games also declined from 127.40 million to 122.44 million. The 12th match played between Mumbai Indians and Rajasthan Royals drew the highest rating of the season with a rating of 5.2, as of 20 April.[22]”

We spotted this statistic on the London 2012 olympics:
“About 1.8 million people made more than 20 million applications for the 6.6 million tickets.
Standard prices range from £20 to £2,012 – the top ticket for the opening ceremony – and oversubscribed events will be decided by a ballot.
Ticket allocation is completely random, so some unlucky applicants might end up without any, while others may be allocated all the tickets they applied for.
A further two million tickets for the Paralympic Games go on sale on 9 September.”

This is turning out to be the Data leak week. After the Sony Playstation Network stolen accounts, we spotted this statistic today –
“A sales rep for the New York Yankees accidentally e-mailed a spreadsheet containing names, addresses, phone numbers, e-mail addresses, and seat numbers of more than 21,000 season ticket holders to thousands of clients, according to blog site Deadspin.
“There are no credit card numbers, but there are account ID numbers. And on Yankees.com, licensees need only their account ID number and password to access their accounts,” the report said yesterday. “With the spreadsheet, we have all the account IDs and can probably guess more than a few passwords via spouse’s names, street names, and good old ‘abc123.’ At the very least, the list email addresses are valuable to spammers.”

“Official broadcaster ESPN Star Sports (ESS) is charging Rs 23-24 lakh for a 10-second slot from last-minute advertisers. Broadcasters sell a part — usually up to 10 per cent — ad slots just before an event to cash in on any possible spike in demand. The ad rates for the final are five-six times the Rs 3.5-4 lakh that ESS charged for the league matches and almost double the Rs 13 lakh advertisers paid for the final match of the third edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL-3) last year.”
