Here Is Proof That The American Middle Class Is Collapsing

Increasingly, how much you have determines your life experiences – not that it was any different in history, just that the set of common experiences is going down – including where you live. We spotted this number today, showing the trend in income segregation in American neighborhoods – forty years ago, 65 percent of Americans lived in middle-income neighborhoods. Today, that number is only 42 percent. The rest of Americans live either in rich neighborhoods or in poor neighborhoods. (Source)

‘CAGR of 50.6 Percent from Now to 2017’. What Device Category?

Spotting growth numbers is fun, and could be profitable. We spotted this stat some time back, a solid growth number – Can You Guess: What Increased 15,000 Percent Between 2011 And 2012? – while not that impressive, we spotted a device category that is projected to grow 50.6 percent from now to 2017 – wearable computers.

“According to a new research report from the analyst firm Berg Insight, sales of smart glasses, smart watches and wearable fitness trackers reached 8.3 million units worldwide in 2012, up from 3.1 million devices in the previous year. Growing at a compound annual growth rate of 50.6 percent, total shipments of wearable technology devices are expected to reach 64.0 million units in 2017.”

This was a stat we picked up from Apple’s new products event today. Made us stop and think. That is a huge, huge number. 170 Million! How do we digest a number like that?

The first iPad was released on April 3, 2010. So Apple has been selling iPads for 1306 days now. 170 Million iPads gives us an average of 90 iPads, every minute!

Internet Statistics: 20 Percent of American Adults Do Not Use The Internet

This number came as a surprise to us – basically because that translates to some 60 million people. We spotted this stat today, that around 60 million people, are shut off from jobs, government services, health care and education, and that the social and economic effects of the digital gap are just getting larger (Source)

China Employs Two Million People To Monitor Web Activity

It definitely makes sense to have a ‘China strategy’ – we had spotted a few stats earlier that proves this point – that China is way different from the rest of the world- we spotted this stat today, that no less than 2 million people are employed by the Chinese Government to ‘monitor’ web activity, including microblogs (Source)

One thing we know – even if you have 100 million messages posted per day (The most popular microblogging site Sina Weibo, launched in 2010, now has more than 500 million registered users with 100 million messages posted daily) – with the right training and tools, with 2 million people, monitoring manually suddenly looks feasible. Wow.
