2012 Smartphone Statistics: Samsung Tops China For The First Time

Samsung sold some 30 million plus smartphones in China in 2012. Well that might not be the most important stat we spotted in that context – Samsung is now the top smartphone seller in China, with a 17 plus percentage market share – quite an achievement for a company that only started selling smartphones in China in 2009 (Source)

So we have another ‘millions’ stat coming out – how do we digest this stat? I think this one is easy – we know that between Apple and Samsung, some 98 percent plus profits of the smartphone market worldwide is shared. This is an indication of who the other players are – in China, that would be Lenovo, Huawei and others.

Gender Imbalance In China: 118 Boys Are Born For Every 100 Girls

This is a problem that will have a strong impact on how the Chinese economy in particular and the world economy in general will shape up in the coming decade and the next – with the one-child policy showing results now – China has a huge gender imbalance problem – we spotted this stat today, that 118 boys are born in China for every 100 girls (Source) – we had in fact written about this a year back – China: 24 Million Men To Be Perpetual Bachelors by 2020

Here is one result, to help us understand the impact – The ‘Chinese Bachelor’ Problem: No Downpayment = No House = No Wife – From that post – “The gender imbalance has in turn driven housing prices up – by some calculations, some $8 trillion of the appreciation in property values can be attributed to gender imbalance alone”

Challenging times ahead for China. History shows that when the trailer is bad, the movie would be worse.

UK Internet Stats: Internet Users Count Doubled In The Last Six Years

This is a stat which sounded a little strange, given the fact that we are talking about 2006 to 2012 and not some time in the late 90s – we spotted this stat today, that in 2012, 33 million adults used the internet daily in the UK, compared with 16 million in 2006 (Source)

How do we digest this number? Is this any kind of anomaly, like the Google’s UK Revenue anomaly? We don’t know that, but such a rate of growth, for a developed country, for such a basic parameter, coming in the second half of the decade is a little surprising.

Music Industry Statistics: Sales Rise In 2012, The First Time Since 1999

We don’t know if it is time to party like it is ’99 – but this is definitely some great news for the music industry. We had spotted several stats on the music industry in the past – digital music stats, spotify stats and so on. We spotted this stat today, that the global 2012 sales for the music industry have risen – 0.3 percent, to $16.5 billion. (Source). Only 8 Percent Of Online Video Viewed On Mobiles And Tablets

Given that we have a billion of these devices out there, this comes as a surprise – that 90 percent of video is still watched on the desktop PC, and just 8 percent of online video is watched on mobile devices (Source)

The content that makes up the Internet is changing fast – and this is another stat that proves the landscape is not shaping up on completely predictable lines – the PC might find some reasons to exist – gaming, video and much more. The PC form factor has enough benefits to stick around for 5 more years at the very least.

OMG, What Happened To Netflix In 2012?

We had come across quite a few articles on Netflix after their Q4 earnings, mostly along the lines of ‘They are back’. We were analyzing some numbers from the earnings report from Netflix – when we realized that 2012 overall has been a disaster of a year for Netflix. Here are some numbers (we have made all comparisons between the Twelve Months Ended Dec 31, 2012 and the Twelve Months Ended Dec 31, 2011).

1. (This is probably the most shocking of all) For an additional revenue of $404.7 Million in 2012, the Cost of Revenue has gone up in 2012 by $585.97 Million. Read that sentence again – are we missing something here? What is Netflix up to? We had spotted cost of revenue issues with Facebook as well – but this one beats everything else.

2. Marketing costs are up 20.3 percent. Some of this might have to do with Splitgate. But a warning bell for sure.

3. Technology and Development costs are up 27 Percent. This is a strategy shift, and will take a couple of years to play out.

4. Operating Income down 86.7 percent in 2012 compared to 2011.

5. Earnings Per Share down by 92.75 percent in 2012 compared to 2011.

Look at those 5 points again. What needs to be up is down, and what needs to be down is up. Is it too early to say that this train is headed in the wrong direction?
