We spotted this interesting stat today:
“Nielsen is out with its annual survey of video game use in the US today, and it’s found that gaming continues to be on the rise across the board. That includes a seven percent increase in total gaming time compared to the previous year (apparently due largely to increases in mobile and tablet gaming), and an increase in modern console ownership from 50 percent of households to 56 percent; that includes so-called 7th generation consoles like the Wii, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. ”

We have to admit – this was a surprising stat for us here at Statspotting. The key is this: “Advanced Gaming Consoles” – we need to remember, these are platforms and this is a very high number for a platform that is basically an entertainment device.

Well this is a tangential clash of platforms at best. But it is an interesting stat:
“Value per User per Year – Facebook: 2.35 USD Apple: 26.79 USD
GDP of total ecosystem in $B Facebook: 2 Apple: 5.4″
Statistics Source: ex post facto
The per user numbers for Facebook could just be because of its sheer size. Or, maybe, the value per user would genuinely drop at a point (which facebook will reach in due course) – we will find out.

We had spotted some interesting stats on virtual worlds before – we spotted this today:
“Virtual goods are hot and getting hotter. PlaySpan, the Visa-owned Monetization-as-a-service provider released a study today that reveals, among other things, that consumer spending on virtual goods has doubled since 2009. (Virtual goods, by the way, being a combination of both virtual currency and virtual items.) Not only that, but $2.3 billion worth of virtual goods were purchased in 2011 in the U.S., up nearly 30 percent from 2009. ”

We had spotted some amazing stats on kinect sales and other gaming console sales – but portable entertainment is not far away – we spotted this today:
“Sony said today that its PlayStation Vita gaming handheld has sold more than 1.2 million units worldwide. The Vita went on sale last week in the U.S. and Europe, and it has been on sale since December in Japan.
The Vita crossed that sales number on Feb. 22, the day it went on sale in the U.S. and Europe. The company has also sold more than 2 million software units. The Vita is Sony’s bid to remain relevant in portable games in an age of smartphones and tablets.”

We have spotted multiple casino stats and gambling stats before. We spotted this today:
“Merlaku, a 26-year-old Kosovar Albanian, was reportedly pushing the buttons on a slot machine in Bregenz, Austria, when it suddenly told him he had won a lot of money: forty-three million euros–which, at current prices, is just under $57 million.
Few on this earth would have felt anything other than numb elation at discovering that their dependence on The Man was finally over.
However, Merlaku was merely left with the numb part of that after trying to collect his prize. For, as the Daily Mail reports, he was offered around $100 for a free meal.”

One of our pet stats here at Statspotting has been Angry Birds. We have spotted how Angry Birds users can create wikipedia and other Angry Birds stats. We spotted this today:
“Media communications agency Starcom took an interesting and innovative approach with the recent global launch of the Samsung Galaxy SII by creating an exclusive level of the super-popular mobile game Angry Birds.
Starcom collaborated with Rovio to create the Galaxy SII level, with Samsung getting unrestricted access to the beloved Angry Birds characters. Rather than just a badged level, Starcom worked with Rovio and Enrich Mobile to offer a much more compelling, integrated experience and incidentally, the first ever Angry Birds level to be played in zero gravity.
The Angry Birds characters were used in mobile rich media units and video strategically placed throughout the Angry Birds mobile game. Samsung ran more than 14,000,000 rich media impressions within the Angry Birds game mainly in Europe, Asia and Australia, driving users through to a Samsung-owned mobile landing page, which acted as the hub of the campaign.”

We had spotted some stats on Angry Birds before including an Angry Birds Wikipedia comparison – we spotted this today:
“Mobile gaming firm Rovio said on Wednesday that its hit game Angry Birds had reached a record 500 million downloads in less than two years since its launch.
In addition, Rovio also announced some other interesting figures. At 100 million downloads, 44 billion stars were collected, and at 210 million downloads, over 200 000 years of Angry Birds have been played.
Rovio’s Peter Vesterbacka also said that 500 million downloads is more than any other mobile game has reached, ever. It has also taken them less than 2 years to achieve this milestone. ”
200000 Years of Angry Birds have been played. Think about that for a second.
