This is one of those stats that you spot and you just ‘have to’ share. We spotted this stat today, that among the 12 enterprise startups that have filed for S1 recently, some 35 percent of total employees in each company, on an average, were in Sales and Marketing functions. The median was higher, at 37.6 percent (Source)
Yes, you could find some examples on the consumer side that could match or even beat these numbers (like Groupon for instance) – but running an organization with such a high proportion of sales people is not what many founders think they signed up for.
