The ‘Chinese Bachelor’ Problem: No Downpayment = No House = No Wife

February 18, 2013 10:30 am

It is a horrible time to be a bachelor in China – the gender imbalance is at a record high. We had spotted a stat sometime back, that some 24 million Chinese men would be perpetual bachelors by 2020 – that kind of imbalance has resulted in fierce competition among Chinese bachelors to attract a wife for themselves – which has resulted in a huge demand for housing which is a widely accepted pre-requisite when it comes to marriage in China.

This has in turn driven housing prices up – by some calculations, some $8 trillion of the appreciation in property values can be attributed to gender imbalance alone. The competition is so fierce and direct, it can now simply be stated as ‘No Downpayment = No House = No Wife – the ‘Chinese Bachelor’ problem.

And it is only getting worse – “Over the next 10 years, the male-to-female ratio will rise to 1.2 men per woman, in part, one of the many unintended consequences of China’s three-decade-old policy limiting couples to one child in a culture where parents overwhelmingly favor males over females.” (Source)

So here is a winning app idea: just build something to help the Chinese bachelor skip the downpayment part and find a girlfriend / wife. And yes, it can be a paid app for sure.
